At MSJ we really value Remembrance Day, as it helps us to remember all of the brave people who have served our country in the military. Last week members of the school parliament interviewed, one veteran and two members of the military community who are still in active service. Two of the interviews were with ladies, and we have been discussing in our classes how we normally think of the armed services as being male dominated, so it made it really interesting to understand the role of females in the military, and how they feel part of the military community.
On Remembrance Day, we invited several veterans to take part in the school service, as well as a servicing Army officer from our MSJ community. Year 6 led the service and reflected on how many loyal military personnel have selflessly, sacrificed themselves to promote peace in the world.
Although the concept of war is very brutal, in school we recognised that the reason for war is to ultimately bring peace. Therefore, every year group created a Dove of Peace, and every child in the school made their own reflective message on a dove feather. We laid these doves at the front of the assembly in recognition of the peace we have in our country. At MSJ, we recognise the importance of peace, and understand that there are conflicts in other countries which stop people from having their freedom and living happy lives.
The atmosphere at both services was thought provoking, reflective and showed gratitude for the sacrifices that have been made to benefit us all. On behalf of the MSJ pupils, the school parliament would like express our gratitude to all our brave military members both past and present. In the words of Harry Truman, an American president during World War Two:
“Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude.”
