Art
At Moordown St Johns, we believe that children should have a broad andbalanced curriculum to enable them to identify areas in which they can excel and flourish and so that they can develop their confidence and independence. Creativity is a skill which is interwoven throughout many areas of the curriculum and it is important for developing a curious and experimental mind. Through our art curriculum, we aim to provide opportunities where children can take creative risks in open ended activities and where there can be an exploration of creativity. Art will be taught as a discreet subject so that clear progression can be identified and built upon. The teaching and learning of art will be both inclusive and empowering for all children and through a caring and enthusiastic environment, children will develop knowledge and skills which will enhance their creativity.
Intent: What we expect children to learn
With an inspiring art curriculum, we aim to provide a sequence of structured art lessons across KS1 and KS2, which build on prior artistic skills and develop creativity, confidence and imagination. Children will have the opportunity both to explore and to practise skills in different areas of sketching, painting, collage and sculpture. They will also learn about significant artists and designers and consider the impact of their work.
Children will be able to develop their own ideas and the ideas of others and can then explore their own interests and curiosities about art. Each lesson will give the children a chance to develop art through their own emotional expression, enabling them to become confident and creative learners.
Implementation: How we teach the subject
The ‘Plan Bee’ scheme of work, which covers the National Curriculum objectives for Art, will form the foundation of our art curriculum. However, other creative resources will be used to enhance teaching and learning in art wherever necessary.
Every year group will study one art project each term. The project will focus on a range of skills in different areas of art: sketching, painting, collage and sculpture.
Different media and techniques will be explored throughout each unit the covered skill and children will have an art book in which to try out ideas so that they can keep a record of their own creative development. In addition to being taught as a discreet lesson, Art will also be used to enrich the wider curriculum.
Impact: How we evaluate the knowledge and skills they have learnt
Through an engaging and exciting Art curriculum, all children will make progress and develop their creative skills and artistic knowledge. At the end of each unit, teachers will assess learning through specific tasks. By the end of their primary education, pupils will be have learnt the following skills:
- Developing techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
- Creating sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
- Improving their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay].
- Understanding how great artists, architects and designers have impacted on society.
Children are assessed in a variety of ways, allowing them to demonstrate their creative skills and knowledge by overcoming any barriers to learning, such as difficulties with reading and writing.
