Swimming Pool – Fundraising

The swimming pool at Moordown St. Johns Primary School has been providing swimming lessons for children and adults for over 40 years.  It is used by a number of local primary schools, swimming groups and clubs and sees about 700 swimmers each week.

Sadly, it is in desperate need of some tender loving care and we need to raise enough money to tackle the refurbishments over the School Summer Holidays.  Without this much needed maintenance the pool is at risk of closure.

Over the coming months we are planning a number of fundraising initiatives to help us reach our target of £27,000

If you wish to help us by donating, please visit our ‘Just Giving’ Page

After holding numerous fundraising events and the kind generosity of  many people, we have made our target of £27,000 which will now enable us to revamp and make safe our tired looking pool.

Work begins in the summer holidays and we are very excited to see the new improvements in September!

Save Our Pool Wristbands

From 1st March, we are selling ‘Save Our Pool’ wristbands for £1. All the children are competing to see which class can sell the most. The winning class will get to have a 1 hour play session in the pool!

Wristbands can also be purchased from our school office for just £1, so please pop in and ask if you would like one.

Swimming the English Channel!

On 27th April our school will be swimming the equivalent of the English Channel!

English Channel

All year groups will take part. We have worked out that the shortest distance to cross the channel is 21 miles. That is the SOS frisbee2equivalent of 2253 lengths of our swimming pool. Each year group will need to swim 321 lengths which works out that each child needs to swim 5 lengths. Each child will be collecting sponsorship from friends and family for this event and anyone that raises £25 or more, will receive a folding Frisbee!

Wow! as you can see the children didn’t just swim the channel once, but over 5 and a half times (please click on map for clearer details). An absolutely amazing effort by everyone that took part including all the children, everyone that agreed to pledge sponsorship, both Mrs Abley and Mrs Laws for their time and effort in organising the event and to all the parent helpers that arrived on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly.

So far, over £6000 has been pledged in sponsorship money for this event.

 MSJ Handprint Mural

Mr Barker, one of our parents, has designed together with some of our children, a whale mural to cover the wall by the pool steps. The whale will be made up of children’s handprints. All children will have the opportunity to add their handprint to the mural for a contribution of £1.

On Friday 15th July, the day of our Summer Fair, there will be another opportunity for children, family and friends to add their  handprint, which will remain on the wall for the next 20 years!

Watch this space for a picture of the design!

Charity Skydive

On Sunday 5th June Mrs Laws, our Finance Manager and Mrs Wright, (Lunchtime Supervisory Assistant and Cleaner) will be jumping from an aeroplane at 10,000 ft! It will take 5 minutes for them to glide down to the ground, they will freefall for the first 30 – 60 seconds at 125 mph. Then at 5,000 feet the parachute will open.

Please sponsor either or both Mrs Laws and Mrs Wright for doing this brave and amazing challenge. ‘Just Giving’

Congratulations to both very brave ladies for completing their skydive and raising a magnificent £1337 so far in sponsorship!

Waitrose Community Matters Scheme

We were pleased to have been selected for the Waitrose Community Matters Scheme for the month of February.

Each month every Waitrose branch donates £1000 through the Community Matters Scheme.  The money is then divided according to the number of tokens received.

Thanks to all families and friends who shopped in Waitrose during the month of February & helped to collect tokens for our swimming pool fund.

We received £390 for the tokens we collected.
Thank you Waitrose!
